Experiment with the group structure. For example, a round-robin brainstorm might allow all students to get a chance to share ideas. Here, each student moves clockwise, one at a time, and shares an idea. Another formatting method might be to have each student copy and paste the ideas into one shared document, followed by a period of reading the ideas, and then adding more thoughts as a group.

Be clear in the specific topic of a brainstorm. If you want students to understand the concept of a “total war” in social studies, a great brainstorm question might be, “Think of anything, big or small, that you might need in order to win a war.” Emphasize the fact that random ideas are often some of the best answers and that there is absolutely no quality control during the brainstorming phase.
